On July 22nd, Licensed Optician and longtime friend of The Regency, Joe Monastere, from Cove Opticians in Glen Cove, paid a visit to The Regency Assisted Living. He came to speak all about his favorite topic, our eyes!
As Joe likes to say, “we only get one pair of eyes”, and they are our windows to the world, so it is extremely important to always take the best care of them at all times. Of course the best way to do this is by keeping up on your eye exams, no matter how old you are. The best way to prevent or slow down many serious eye conditions, such as glaucoma and macular degeneration, is to catch them early. Wearing polarized sunglasses is also of the utmost importance. Studies have shown that repeated sun exposure and ultra violet rays increase the incidence of cataracts and macular degeneration. Wearing sunglasses also protects the delicate skin around the eyes and prevents skin cancer of the eyelids. Eating a healthy and balanced diet, not smoking and managing medications and diabetes also top Joe’s list of preventive measures.
Joe went on to discuss signs and symptoms of many common eye conditions such as: dry eye, flashes and floaters, retinal detachment, cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration. He demonstrated examples of what someone with these conditions would actually see, using flash cards.
Joe’s presentation was very helpful and informative, for both residents and staff alike. He stayed for over 2 hours in order to answer all of the questions that people had to ask him. The Regency Assisted Living Community would like to thank Joe for his excellent and thorough presentation. Everyone really enjoyed hearing such an engaging speaker. As Joe is also affiliated with Cove Audiology and Hearing Services, we are looking forward to having him back in September to speak all about ears and hearing.
