Glen Cove, New York: At a recent special ceremony at Congregation Tifereth in Glen Cove, five women living at The Regency in Glen Cove were honored with their first Bat Mitzvah. Helen Brezil, Claire Margolis, Merle Weintraub, Rita Wolfensohn, and Marilyn Seltzer celebrated the ritual of Jewish confirmation which is usually reserved for women 12 years of age. 70 or 80 years ago, this ritual was not performed for women. This was an opportunity for The Regency ladies to be feted for their contributions to family strength and unity. The five received training from Cantor Gustavo Gitlin with the ceremony conducted by Reb Huberman.
The Bat Mitzvah ceremony ended with the five women being called to the Torah and reciting their “confirmation” blessings. The daughters, brothers, and grandchildren of the Bat Mitzvahed were on hand to witness the confirmation and later, to join in the lunch for all congregants.
Beth Evans, Administrator, The Regency remarked, “The Rabbi and Cantor were spectacular with the sermon which was all about thanking the strong women who passed on Judaism and strength to their children and grandchildren.”
Enid, daughter of Helen Brezil, shared how much the ceremony meant to her and her daughter, “Thank you so much for planning the Bat Mitzvah for my mother. It meant so much to her and our family.”
