The Regency Loves The 2016 Summer Olympics

The 2016 Summer Olympic Games will be held from August 5th to the 21st in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. All sports will be held across 33 different venues throughout the Barra, Copacabana, Deodoro and Maracana regions of the city. Maracana Stadium will be the site of the opening and closing ceremonies on August 5th and 21st. New sports added to the 2016 Olympic program this year include rugby sevens and golf.
The Olympic Games originated in ancient Greece over 3,000 years ago and have become the world’s preeminent sporting competition. The first modern Olympics took place in 1896 in Athens, and featured 280 participants from 13 nations, competing in 43 events. Since 1994, the Summer and Winter Olympic Games have been held separately and have alternated every two years. Today, in the 2016 Summer Games, there are over 30 different sports and activities including archery, sailing, golf, boxing, gymnastics and soccer- there is definitely something for everyone to enjoy with the summer games!
This year at The Regency, under the guidance of Recreation Director John Luboja, we are holding our own version of the Olympic games. John is a big sports fan and was really looking forward to getting everyone involved and excited about the Olympics. Every day beginning August 5th through the 20th residents will be able to participate in fun games and activities. Some of the many games the residents will be playing are bocce, horseshoes, target golf, chair soccer and balloon volleyball. On the 20th there will be awards given out along with a closing ceremony. We hope you can join us for some of the festivities. We are eager to find out who the Regency champions will be!
