Regency University Constitution Seminar

NYPD Detective, James Coll( 2nd from left), with Regency residents and community members

On Wednesday, January 15th, The Regency held its first Regency University seminar of 2014. James Coll, NYPD Detective and Adjunct Professor of History, presented, “The Police and The Constitution” to Regency residents and members of the community.
James spoke about the evolving powers and limitations of the police in modern day society and posed questions to his audience such as, “Can a police officer frisk an individual who is not taken into custody?” and “Does the Miranda warning have to be read to every suspect arrested?” They explored these questions and more and looked at exceptional cases throughout history that have set precedents for the need to create new laws. James was an excellent speaker and really engaged his audience. He took the time to answer all of the questions that were asked of him and really enjoyed interacting with everyone.
James teaches American and Constitutional history at Nassau Community College and is also a detective in a tactical and rescue unit for the New York City Police Department. In his work with the NYPD, James has received numerous awards, including being named cop of the Year by the New York City Police Foundation for the efforts of his unit during the US Airways Flight 1549 plane crash in the Hudson River. In addition, James is the founder of changeNYS, a non-partisan organization dedicated to promoting the education of New Yorkers about civic understanding and political reform in our state. The Regency would like to thank James for his excellent presentation and is looking forward to having him return to speak again soon. The next Regency University seminar, “Finding Inner Strength When Life Gets Difficult”, presented by Author Alice Crespo, will be held at 2:30 pm on February 20th.
