Boosting Your Immune System Naturally with Dr. Rosemarie Cartagine

Sniffling and Sneezing and Coughing… Oh My!

Rosemarie Cartagine

Dr. Rosemarie Cartagine with Regency Executive Chef, Pat Marone

On October 28th, Dr. Rosemarie Cartagine, a local Chiropractor and Clinical Nutritionist, came to visit The Regency to speak to residents about how to strengthen their immune systems naturally. With cold and flu season upon us this was the perfect time to learn more about different ways to stay healthy and feel good. Dr. Cartagine stressed that starting with a good foundation of living a healthy, balanced and meaningful life is of the utmost importance. Healthy eating, drinking plenty of water, exercise, quality sleep, socialization and having fun are all essential to living your best life. As always, eating a well-balanced diet is at the top of the list. Dark leafy greens and “super foods” like blueberries, cranberries, kale and sweet potatoes are loaded with vitamins and minerals. Lemon is an excellent cleanser, purifier and detoxifier. Just adding half of a lemon to your water everyday alkalinizes your body which helps to fight off disease. Raw honey contains bee pollen and minerals to support the respiratory system and white tea is strongly antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal. And you weren’t dreaming when you thought that your Mom’s chicken soup made you feel better… It turns out that homemade chicken soup with lots of vegetables helps to loosen mucous and adds nourishment. Dr. Cartagine also discussed using meditation, acupuncture, massage and Aroma Therapy to give an additional boost to your immune system. And since she is a Chiropractor she is obviously a big believer in the benefits of Chiropractic care. After Dr. Cartagine’s presentation, The Regency’s Executive Chef, Pat Marone, blended up an incredibly delicious immunity boosting smoothie with an almond milk and yogurt base, raw honey and fresh fruits and veggies. Chef Pat’s Incredible Immunity Boosting Smoothie
½ Cup Plain Yogurt
½ Cup Unsweetened Almond Milk
2 Small Navel Oranges, peeled and pulled apart into wedges
½ Green Apple, not peeled, sliced
1 Cup Raw Spinach, packed
2 Tablespoons Raw Honey
A Few Ice Cubes
Place all ingredients, in the order listed, into a blender. Blend until smooth. Makes 2 smoothies.
Unfortunately, it’s that time of year again… The time when we have to start thinking about boosting our immune system, in order to stay as healthy as possible through cold and flu season. This smoothie really packs a huge health punch! The probiotics in the yogurt contain friendly bacteria and the almond milk is high in vitamin E which helps to enhance immune function. The spinach is full of antioxidants, folate and vitamin C, and of course the orange is also high in vitamin C. The raw honey here is a key immunity boosting ingredient. Raw honey is known as an anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal food.
