Memory Boosting Care at The Regency Senior Living Community

While some form of memory loss is a natural part of the aging process, at The Regency at Glen Cove Senior Living we are always on the lookout for ways to keep our residents’ brains fit, improve cognitive abilities, boost memory and stave off dementia. While ongoing research and studies as to how to prevent and treat Alzheimer's disease (AD) abounds, scientists haven’t yet discovered that magic pill. However, they have gained more clarity as to the course of the disease’s development, and evidence for prevention was presented at the recent Alzheimer's Association International Conference in Boston.
Proven preventive measures included exercising regularly, eating well, sleeping enough, reducing stress, as well as keeping one’s brain active and challenged.

Regular aerobic exercise (three times a week for 40 minutes is recommended) has been proven to improve quality of life even after the initial onset of dementia. Daily exercise classes at The Regency include Aerobics, Yoga, Tai Chi, Jazzercise and Pilates.
Healthy Meals and Nutrition for Seniors
Healthy meals are integral to reducing Alzheimer's risk, enhancing memory, and improving overall brain and body health. Doctors recommend a heart-healthy Mediterranean diet rich in plant-based foods such as vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grains, with healthy fats such as olive oil instead of butter, and a minimal amount of processed foods and sweets. Chef Pat Marone and our licensed Dietician work within these guidelines to prepare 3 gourmet meals daily.
Cognitive Activities for Seniors
To keep mentally active it’s important to challenge yourself and learn new skills. The Regency University program introduces our seniors to an array of new subjects from History to Biology – stimulating their brains and opening up their minds to encompass a world of information. We also encourage computer activities and games that require residents to strategize and interact socially at the same time, such as board, word, puzzle, and card games.
At The Regency at Glen Cove Senior Living Community, we are well-equipped to care for seniors suffering from short-term memory loss, memory impairments, and those in the early stages of dementia. Our recreation program features activities specially geared to enhance their cognitive skills and stimulate social interaction. Reminiscence Therapy, Guided Recreation and failure-free pastimes are just some of the tools we use to affirm their dignity and self-esteem. Our staff understand these residents’ singular needs and provide the necessary care and encouragement with the utmost sensitivity.
