“Oh, say! can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming;
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there:
Oh, say! does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?”

-The Star-Spangled Banner

Congratulations to the newest American citizen, The Regency’s very own dining room staff member, Edis Canales. Over ten years ago, Edis and her family moved from El Salvador to the United States for a better life. “Working at The Regency has pushed me to come out of my shell as I am very shy. Taking the test to become a United States citizen was very intimidating, but I knew I wanted to do it.”, Edis giggled. Edis went to the Glen Cove Library to start studying and the Kathy, the librarian, recommended a retired teacher to help her prepare for test.

Talk about a full circle moment, the teacher happens to be one of our Regency resident’s son, Saul Schachter. Saul knew exactly who Edis was! They studied together a “lucky 13” times before Edis passed her test on Monday! “After retiring from teaching from North Shore High School almost 9 years ago, I’ve been teaching English to about 30 immigrants for the last five years. Edis is my first student I’ve helped prepare for the test. She was a joy to work with!”, Saul shared. “I am so happy my son helped one of my Regency family members!”, Resident Vivian Schachter stated. Way to go Edis! The Regency gave Edis a small American flag and flowered plaque to honor her huge achievement. It simply read, “Land That I Love” with her name and date of her citizenship. “I will cherish this forever!”, Edis shared. We are so proud of you! Just remember no dream is out of reach and sometimes it takes a little extra push (& help) to achieve it!
